Who this advice is for

Applies to

  • Bedrooms that exceed 26°C for more than 33 hours between May and September (CIBSE TM59 overheating threshold).
  • South or west-facing bedrooms with single-aspect glazing and no external shading.
  • Loft conversions and top-floor flats where heat collects under the roof.
  • Light sleepers sensitive to fan or compressor noise.

Not intended for

  • Bedrooms that are merely warm rather than overheating; opening a window may be enough.
  • Listed buildings or conservation areas where external shading and AC units are restricted; route via planning first.

Shade the glass and purge heat at night before specifying any cooling kit.

Why this comes first

External shading (shutters, blinds, brise-soleil) cuts solar gain by 70–90%; internal blinds only by 10–20%. Most bedroom overheating is a glazing-and-shading problem dressed up as a cooling problem.

If cooling is still needed, size it to the bedroom; not the whole upstairs.

Why this comes first

An oversized split unit short-cycles, dehumidifies too aggressively and is noisier than the manufacturer's spec implies. A bedroom-sized unit (typically 2.0–2.5 kW for a UK double bedroom) run gently is quieter and cheaper to run than a 3.5 kW unit throttled down.

How we'd approach this

Fix the room you sleep in before re-engineering the house.

Bedroom heat is rarely a whole-house problem; it is usually one window, one wall and one ceiling void doing most of the damage. We would shade that window externally, purge overnight for a week with a fan in the right place and only then ask whether cooling kit is still needed. Half the time it is not.

If kit is the answer, we would size it to the bedroom rather than the floor. A 2.0 to 2.5 kW inverter split run gently is quieter, cheaper and longer-lived than a 3.5 kW unit throttled down; the datasheet noise figure only holds when the unit runs at the speed it was designed for.

CO₂ is the half of the brief most quotes ignore. Continuous trickle ventilation at the Approved Document F rate keeps overnight CO₂ in range without opening windows to street noise, and tends to do as much for sleep quality as a degree off the air temperature.
