Blinds and shading

Most of the cooling job, done before any cooling kit.

A south-facing window on a clear August afternoon delivers roughly the same heat into a room as a small electric heater running continuously. Stopping the heat before it arrives is almost always cheaper, quieter and longer-lived than removing it afterwards. The control layer is what makes the stopping happen at the right time.

What most people
want to know first.

Four quick framings to help you place this topic inside your wider home plan.

  1. 01

Start here if you are about to size air conditioning for a bedroom that overheats; external shading on the worst window often halves the cooling demand.

  2. 02

Start here if you have manual blinds you never quite remember to close; an occupancy or sun-position trigger does the remembering.

  3. 03

Start here if a room loses too much heat after dusk in winter; thermal-lined curtains on a schedule are the cheapest fix in the catalogue.

The field guide

What you actually
need to know.

Independent, opinionated, and written for homeowners spending real money.

§01

External shading first, internal shading second.

External shutters, awnings and brise-soleil intercept solar heat before it crosses the glass and reach roughly three times the effective cooling reduction of an internal blind. Internal blinds and curtains still help, particularly when paired with a night-purge ventilation strategy, but they are managing heat that has already entered the room.

§02

What the control layer adds.

Automated blinds tied to a sun-position or occupancy trigger close at the moment the room would otherwise begin to overheat, without anyone needing to be home. The same controller can open them again after sunset to let the room purge against cooler night air. The same logic applies to winter; thermal curtains closing on a dusk trigger and opening with the morning sun are a meaningful comfort and bills upgrade.

Decision framework

Three questions to answer before you commit.

01

Is automated shading worth it without overheating?

Usually not on its own. It earns its keep on south and west-facing rooms or rooflights.

02

Smart blinds or smart curtain tracks?

Either works; tracks tend to suit traditional UK interiors better and integrate well with thermal-lined curtains.
