Why is my air conditioning noisier than I expected, and can it be made quieter?
Modern split air conditioning is one of the quietest mechanical systems you can install in a home, but real-world noise depends on the unit's location, the duct routing, the mounting and how it is being controlled. Most noise complaints trace back to install choices rather than the equipment itself, which is good news because they can often be improved without replacing anything.
What it usually looks like
These are the symptoms readers describe most often. None of them alone is diagnostic, but together they build a picture.
- Indoor unit audible when trying to sleep
- Outdoor unit disturbs a neighbour
- Rattling from the wall behind the indoor unit
- Compressor cycles loudly on and off
Most common in: Loft conversion · New-build flat · Victorian terrace
Before you buy anything
Watch the house respond as you scroll.
These checks are listed in the order we would work through them. The illustration on the left changes with each one, so you can see what each check is actually addressing before deciding whether it is worth doing.
The source is loud, the path is direct, and the room receives all of it.
Confirm the indoor unit is on its lowest fan setting at night
Most units have a quiet mode that drops fan speed and noise dramatically. Setting it once usually solves overnight complaints.
Inspect the outdoor unit mounting
An outdoor unit bolted directly to a brick wall transmits vibration through the building. Anti-vibration feet are inexpensive and very effective.
Look at the line-set routing
A refrigerant pipe pressed against pipework or a stud will sing in operation. Repositioning or adding a rubber sleeve usually quiets it.
Check the location relative to neighbours
An outdoor unit a metre from a bedroom window will always feel loud. Moving it, or fitting an acoustic enclosure, may be necessary in a terrace.
Ask the installer about target temperature and tolerance
Tight tolerances make the unit cycle more often, which means more noise. Widening the tolerance by a degree often resolves perceived loudness.
Products that may help
Only consider these once the checks above have been ruled out. A product fitted into the wrong cause is rarely satisfying.
The cheapest answer to air conditioning louder than expected is usually the one that addresses the cause rather than the symptom. The list above is in the order we would work through it, because the checks at the top tend to rule out the most expensive mistakes further down.
