Why is mould appearing in my bedroom, and what should I do about it?

Mould in a bedroom is almost always the meeting of warm, humid air with a cold surface. People exhale a surprising amount of water overnight, the bedroom door is usually closed, and a corner of the room near an external wall sits cold enough for water to condense and feed the mould. Treating the spores without treating the conditions that grew them rarely works.

Pull furniture six inches away from external walls

A wardrobe pressed against a cold external wall traps cool, still air which condenses overnight. The gap alone often clears a recurring patch.

Sleep with the bedroom door open if possible

A closed door allows humidity from overnight breathing to build to far higher levels than a household with circulating air. The difference is often visible within a week.

Add or fix bedroom ventilation

Bedrooms are the most under-ventilated rooms in most UK homes. Trickle vents open at night make a measurable difference without affecting warmth significantly.

Measure the wall temperature where the mould appears

If the wall is below twelve degrees in winter, no amount of ventilation will permanently solve the problem. Insulation on that wall is the real answer.

Treat the mould with an appropriate fungicide before redecorating

Painting over mould seals the spores in. They will return through the new paint within months unless they have been killed first.

    Photograph the affected wall and note exactly where the mould stops

    Mould patterns reveal cause: high corners point to humidity, tide marks to rising damp, isolated patches to a cold bridge or external defect. Treatment depends entirely on which it is.

    Move the bed and any wardrobe at least 5cm from external walls

    Most bedroom mould begins where furniture traps still air against a cold surface. Repositioning costs nothing and often halts new growth within weeks.

    Log humidity and temperature in the bedroom for two weeks

    Persistent humidity above 60% with bedroom temperatures below 16°C is a near-certain recipe for mould; the numbers tell you which lever to pull first.

    If it does not come back within a month, the cause was a one-off (a wet winter, a broken fan). If it returns, the cause is structural and needs more than cleaning.

Why this comes first

Mould needs a cold surface and humid air, and a cold corner near an external wall is almost always the place a bedroom expresses both. Ventilating a house that still has a wall sitting at 10°C will reduce mould, but it will not stop it; warming the surface above the dew point is what permanently solves the patch.

Restore continuous background ventilation in the bedroom

Why this comes first

A closed bedroom door overnight can push humidity above 70% before morning. Reopening trickle vents and adding a humidistat-controlled extract or a small continuous bedroom fan moves the room onto continuous ventilation, which is what current UK guidance expects of tighter dwellings.

Treat the existing mould properly, then watch the hygrometer

Why this comes first

Painting over mould seals the spores in and they return through the new paint within months. Treating with an appropriate fungicide, then watching humidity and surface temperature for a winter, is the only way to know whether the underlying fix is holding.

How we'd approach this

Treat mould as a symptom; the cure is whichever cause the evidence points to.

If this were our bedroom we would not start with bleach. We would photograph the wall, log humidity for a fortnight and move the furniture. Most cases resolve in those three steps because most mould in UK bedrooms is condensation meeting a cold surface behind a wardrobe, not a building defect.

If the numbers stay stubborn after the habits change, we would put ventilation in before insulation. A continuous extract fan or PIV unit is cheaper, easier to reverse and easier to measure than wall work. Insulation is the right answer for some homes but it is rarely the cheapest first move.

We would also be honest about health. Where a child or someone with asthma sleeps in the room, the proportionate response is faster and broader than the textbook says. Comfort margins exist for a reason.
