Air Quality · The problem library

Why do my allergies feel worse at home than outside, and what would help?

Indoor air can hold higher concentrations of dust mites, pet dander, mould spores, cleaning chemicals and outdoor particulates than the air outside. Ventilation and filtration are the long-term remedies, alongside removing the worst sources at floor level. Standalone air purifiers help in single rooms but rarely solve a house-wide issue.

What it usually looks like

These are the symptoms readers describe most often. None of them alone is diagnostic, but together they build a picture.

  • Eyes itchy or nose congested in the morning
  • Symptoms easing within minutes of going outside
  • Worse in the bedroom or on soft furnishings
  • Pets visible in the same rooms as the worst symptoms

Most common in: Victorian terrace · New-build flat · Loft conversion

These checks are listed in the order we would work through them. The illustration on the left changes with each one, so you can see what each check is actually addressing before deciding whether it is worth doing.

Warm wet air settles on the coldest surface and stays there. The window streams; mould follows.

01

Look at the bedding routine

Dust mites concentrate in bedding more than anywhere else in the home. Hot washing weekly and a mite-proof cover are the lowest-cost interventions.

02

Vacuum with a HEPA filter rather than reach for an air purifier

A HEPA vacuum removes allergens at source rather than circulating them. It is usually cheaper than a quality purifier.

03

Check the bedroom ventilation

An under-ventilated bedroom concentrates everything you exhale, plus dust mite waste. Improving ventilation often makes mornings easier within days.

04

Look at sources of indoor humidity

Mould spores feed on moisture. Keeping the house between forty and sixty per cent humidity makes a measurable difference to allergy sufferers.

05

Consider an air purifier with a verified HEPA filter for the bedroom

Where the source cannot be removed, a quality purifier in the room you spend most time in is the most effective use of one.

Products that may help

Only consider these once the checks above have been ruled out. A product fitted into the wrong cause is rarely satisfying.

House Summary

The cheapest answer to allergies or asthma worse indoors is usually the one that addresses the cause rather than the symptom. The list above is in the order we would work through it, because the checks at the top tend to rule out the most expensive mistakes further down.
